I would like to bring to your attention a great opportunity at the Political Science Department at Central European University (CEU) for those considering to pursue studies either at MA or PhD level.
We offer one- and two-year MA programs, as well as doctoral education in political science. Our programs focus on such fields as European politics, democratization, regime change, political institutions, party systems, comparative political economy, media policy, analytical and normative political theory, constitutional theory and political sociology. Our one-year MA program and the PhD program are accredited in the US, our two-year MA program has both Hungarian (European) and US accreditation. In all our programs the language of instruction is English.
Located in a the lively and fascinating city of Budapest, the Central European University offers not only a unique experience of postgraduate studies in a dynamic international environment but it also enables students to achieve a successful international career. The Political Science Department’s reputation for excellence in teaching and research has also been acknowledged by prestigious world university rankings. Our department is among the best 100 universities in the world according to the latest Quacquarelli Symonds (QS 2010) rankings (http://www.topuniversities.com/university-rankings/world-university-rankings/2011/subject-rankings/social-sciences/politics-international-studies), as well as one of the best political science departments in Europe, receiving five stars from the Center for Higher Education Development in 2009 (http://www.excellenceranking.org/eusid/EUSID?module=Fachbereich&do=show&id=166).
During the last few years a number of new colleagues joined the Political Science Department. Next to the core faculty, distinguished visiting professors (e.g. Kenneth Benoit, Marizio Cotta, Richard S. Katz, Radoslaw Markowski, Herbert Kitschelt, Philippe Schmitter, and Sidney Tarrow) give courses. Our outstanding 5:1 student/faculty ratio ensures the opportunity for professional development for each and every student. We aim to foster critical thinking and analytical skills through debates, workshops, seminars and conferences. The Department strives for academic excellence by providing students with firm background in such core areas as comparative politics, political theory and political economy. We offer advanced training in both statistical analysis and qualitative methodology that can encourage students to select the most suitable tools for the research topic they would like to elaborate. Research is a cornerstone of CEU as well as the Department’s innovative approach. With the help of interdisciplinary and comparative incentives the students are encouraged to address complex social and political issues of key interest. Students are also welcome to collaborate with the faculty and exchange their ideas on research in various research groups.
CEU offers a wide range of financial assistance for prospective students. Scholarships and tuition fee waivers are available for both Master (one-year and two-year) and PhD studies on a competitive basis. The majority of CEU students receive internal or external financial aid while about 90% of the students at the Political Science Department are granted some kind of financial aid, ranging from tuition waiver to full stipends.
